Transporting and bringing back bodies from a foreign country
Transporting and repatriating a body from a foreign country requires adherence to specific procedures and regulations. Below, we outline the most important steps and information that may prove helpful.
1. Authorization to transport bodies
The transportation of remains is permitted to persons authorized to bury the deceased, with permission, in specially designated means of transportation. The right to bury the deceased is held by their immediate remaining family, namely: surviving spouse, descendants, ascendants, collateral relatives up to the fourth degree of kinship, and relatives in the direct line up to the first degree.
2. Transporting bodies within the country's borders
The transport of bodies and remains within the country's borders may be carried out without obtaining a permit for a distance not exceeding 60 kilometres, and within the area of the communes where the death occurred, regardless of the distance.
3. Transporting a body outside the country
Transporting a body over longer distances, transporting it by rail, planes and ships over any distance, and transporting it outside the country may only take place after obtaining the permission of the relevant sanitary inspector.
4. Bringing a body from a foreign country
Bringing a body or human remains from a foreign country requires a permit issued by the starosta (starosta) competent for the place where the body or human remains are to be buried, in consultation with the state district sanitary inspector.
5. Permit application
Permits are issued upon written request from the entity authorized to conduct burials. The starosta issues an appropriate administrative decision no later than three days after receiving the request.
